Female Only Operating Theatres

Why I Offer a Female-Only Operating Theatre Option for Private Surgery Patients

By Dr Lucia Saliba, Breast & Endocrine Surgeon (FRACS)

As a female surgeon who has cared for women from all backgrounds, I understand that surgery is not just a medical procedure, it’s a personal experience. For many women, having a sense of comfort, privacy, and control throughout their care is just as important as the clinical outcome.

To support this, I am proud to offer an optional female-only operating theatre environment for eligible private patients at selected hospitals. This option reflects my ongoing commitment to respectful, patient-centred care and to providing choices that align with each woman’s values and preferences.

What Is a Female-Only Operating Theatre?

When arranged, this environment ensures that all key clinical team members; including the surgeon, anaesthetist, and theatre nurses, are female. It is coordinated in collaboration with participating private hospitals and can only be offered when staffing and scheduling allow.

Please note this option:

  • Is available only to private patients

  • Is subject to hospital and staff availability

  • Can only be confirmed following your initial consultation

  • Involves separate consultation fees

The Benefits of a Female-Only Theatre

Many women appreciate having the option of an all-female surgical team for a variety of reasons:

  • A preference for enhanced privacy and modesty

  • Alignment with personal, cultural, or religious values

  • A desire for a more comfortable and familiar care environment

  • Confidence in choosing a setting that reflects individual comfort and autonomy

This option is about giving women greater control over their healthcare experience, ensuring they feel informed, respected, and supported at every step.

Clinical Excellence and Empowered Choice

Offering a female-only surgical environment is about supporting patient autonomy and preference. Some women simply feel more at ease knowing their surgical team will be exclusively female and they deserve to have that choice.

It’s not about exclusion; it’s about providing personalised care that respects your values and priorities. Every woman should feel empowered to make informed choices about her care, especially during such an important and personal moment.

The standard of care remains the same safe, professional, and evidence-based, regardless of team composition. This service simply adds an extra layer of comfort and respect for those who value it.

How to Access Your Female Only Theatre Option

If you wish to explore this service, please mention it during your initial private consultation. We’ll discuss your medical needs, determine eligibility, and liaise with participating hospitals to confirm availability. Final arrangements depend on scheduling and staff coordination.

If you’d like to discuss your options or book a private consultation, please contact my rooms directly. My team and I are here to help guide you through every step of your care.
